Where to Stay & Eat with Kids in Mexico City 🇲🇽

Rocio lived in Mexico City (CDMX) for 5 years, I've been 6 times, and spent more than 6 months there. Our son Leo was even born there (and holds a Mexican passport as a result)!

Most families I know bypass CDMX, and head straight ‌for the Mexican coasts. I'm sure they have the impression that it's too big, dirty, chaotic, and (drug cartel) dangerous. Not a place for kids.

But what if I told you there's a part of Mexico City that's hip, clean, green, walkable, quiet, and safe?

🏨 Where To Stay

There's no better neighbourhood to stay in CDMX than Condesa. Direct neighbour Roma Norte is a close second.

It's arty and bohemian, with green tree-lined streets and Art Deco buildings.

There are tons of great restaurants, nice parks, and the forest with playgrounds. You can walk everywhere!

We usually book a (serviced) apartment on Airbnb. Here's our Wish List of places to stay in Condesa and Roma Norte that are ideal for families with kids.

🍽 Where To Eat

The food in Mexico City is amazingly good and affordable. And not just Mexican food. I could recommend dozens of amazing places to eat in CDMX, but here's my top 10 in Condesa / Roma Norte:

High-end

Lardo: Hip Mexican-Italian fusion that's incredibly popular, especially for weekend brunch. For brunch, go on a weekday to avoid the queues.

Lardo · Agustín Melgar 6, Colonia Condesa, Cuauhtémoc, 06140 Ciudad de México, CDMX, Mexico
★★★★★ · Mediterraans restaurant

Contramar: Tuna tostadas & fish tacos in an airy dining room with an expansive plant-filled patio.

Contramar · Calle de Durango 200, Roma Nte., Cuauhtémoc, 06700 Ciudad de México, CDMX, Mexico
★★★★★ · Visrestaurant

Castizo: Contemporary Spanish & signature cocktails.

Restaurante Castizo · C. Chilpancingo 46, Colonia Condesa, Cuauhtémoc, 06100 Ciudad de México, CDMX, Mexico
★★★★★ · Spaans restaurant

Budget - Mid:

Orinoco: the best (el pastor) tacos in CDMX.

Maikai: quiet neighbourhood joint for top-notch ramen and poke. We go here more than anywhere else when we're in the city!

El Pescadito: Great and cheap fish taco place (and I don't usually even like fish that much)

Ojo de Agua: healthy brunch, juice and horchata.

Street food stall: I don't even know what their speciality is called, but the locals flock here and it's incredible!

Mikado: Hole in the wall Japanese place with awesome karaage & Vietnamese coffee.

Shake Shack: expensive for fast food and by Mexican standards, but sooo good! Try the Mexico City-only special Horchata Shake!

🍨 Dessert

El Moro: Delicious churros and cool decor.

Santa Clara: Best ice cream in the 'hood.

☕️ Coffee

Quentin: hole in the wall quality coffee.

‌🚶‍♂️ How To Get Around

You can walk everywhere in Condesa. If you get tired, Ubers are plentiful and cheap.
